Message from Honorable Minister Dinesh Gunawardena

Hon.Minister Dinesh GunawardenaI am very glad, as Minister of Urban Development & Sacred Area Development, to have been instrumental in the establishment of the Sri Lanka Institute of Landscape Architects and to be the Chief Guest on the occasion of its ceremonial inauguration. Our Ministry has long recognized the need for this specialized expertise in planning and development efforts throughout Sri Lanka, and trust that there will be fruitful mutual co-operation between landscape architectural professionals and all related professionals in the future.

Our history proudly records exceptional landscape architecture in Mahamevuna Uyana, Ranmasu Uyana, Ritigala, Jetavanaramaya, Mihintale, Sigiriya, and Polonnaruwa sites, that have contributed to this important profession.

There is a lack of suitably qualified landscape architects to meet the need for them throughout the country and I exhort our Universities and similar institutions of higher education to initiate or upgrade courses to train appropriately talented youth and even older people in accordance with the standards laid down by the International Federation of Landscape Architects. We cannot afford to have designers of the outdoor environment who are not adequately skilled and dedicated in their chosen line of work, if we are genuinely concerned for the health of our population and to truly conserve the heritage and character of our island in our development work.

I have noticed the dearth of such professionals in the public and private sector and I recommend the establishment of landscape architectural positions in all relevant central and local government organizations, with the guidance of the newly formed institute.

It is indeed essential that such professionals be involved in all physical development efforts of our land, from being vital members of teams for macro-level tasks including policy formulation, to bringing their special skills and dedication to all physical development projects, whatever their scale.

I therefore wish the Sri Lanka Institute of Landscape Architects the strength to meet its aims and obligations, and I assure them that I will encourage and assist the institute.

Dinesh Gunawardena
Honorable Minister of Urban Development & Sacred Area Development
